Essay Proposal

Has the feminist movement influenced the portrayal of women in billboard advertising?

“A culture that continues to control women through the commodification of their bodies.”
Barbara Kruger.
Kruger, B. (1994) Remote Control; Power, Culture and the World of Appearances. London: The MIT Press.

The question has the opportunity to inquire into the visual imagery of lingerie advertising. Lingerie advertising is a thought provoking subject, understanding the ideas, concepts and possible hidden meanings that will help me answer this question. The people who are against lingerie ads say that it should be banned within a hundred meters of schools. I feel it shouldn’t be banned as primary school children are not exactly looking at the ads it’s more there mums or dads but that’s why there placed in these areas were women can see. I feel that people should get in touch with today’s society and need to accept that things change within today’s modern world, I feel they need to look more into what the image is advertising not what is actually displayed on the advertisement. The underlining question within this debate is would the public’s views be different if it was a larger women or someone of a medium size on the advertisement? However I like the fact that lingerie advertising causes quite a few debates.

Billboard advertising can be powerful in a way as it is all around us and it always catches people’s attention. Its purpose is to get people to buy the products as advertising the products on a billboard draws attention regardless whether it is good attention or bad. In research I have found that within billboard advertising there are feminist elements and I want to make inquire into why.

These are elements that have relevant links to my main research question, I would like to research further into the questions which will hopefully provide me with more information as to why there are so many debates about this sort of advertising. Are advertising companies that produce these types of advertisements taking into consideration the response? Does sexual content through billboard advertising sell the product?

I am doing this for the knowledge that will help me to gain more experience on the subject of advertising, which is something I feel most passionate about. The question I want to know is what risks are involved in this type of advertising and do the company’s lose profits or do they gain profits?

Review 1 Female Lingerie Advertising
The media plays a big role in constructing the exploitation of sexuality to sell products in advertising.

It is said that teenage girls define beauty by shape and size of their bodies with the impression that being skinnier is sexier. They get some of these impressions from seeing sexy women advertising products in a sexual manner. Vulnerable teenagers with poor self-esteem and unhappiness may be drawn to these images and problems can arise, such like eating disorders.

Advertisements of close-up images of a model’s cleavage and slogans like “perfect fit” have had complaints made from viewers who have said the posters are too sexually suggestive to be shown were children might see them. It has been announced by TV Programme that billboards with nearly nude models in poses have been banned within 100 yards of Schools and Nurseries to protect children. This is how strongly the public have started to feel about advertising in this way.

M&S and Diesel adverts over the past three years have attracted complaints because of the effect on children according to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) viewers said that the content was too sexually suggestive for children.

The Diesel adverts were so provocative in the content that they were banned from being used as billboard posters. They were told by the ASA that the images could only be used in adult magazines otherwise it might cause behaviour that was anti-social or irresponsible.

The ASA have said that they are going to explore ways in which parents can help protect their children from “invasion of sexually provocative content”.

More than 80 per cent of parents in today’s society confessed they thought children are forced to grow up too quickly.

Advertising in such ways has a strong influence on young people. This should be an important factor when constructing an advert to sell such products.
